James Fisher and Catherine Lenhart

3rd great grandparents < Henry William Fisher < Viola May Fisher < Arthur Eugene Ferrell

James Fisher was born in 1819 to James Fisher and Elizabeth Betsy Kale. James married Catharine Lenhart on September 19, 1843 in Carroll, Ohio. Catharine may have been the daughter of Peter Lenhart and Nancy Ann Thomas. She was born about 1826 and died sometime after 1870. James died September 12, 1864 and is buried at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Perry Township, Tuscarawas, Ohio.

In 1850 and 1860, James and Catherine were living in Clay Township, Tuscarawas, Ohio. No employment is listed for either in 1860; in 1850 James was a farmer.

Their children were:

  1. Elizabeth Ann Fisher born 1844, died 1858. Buried at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Tuscarawas, Ohio.
  2. Henry William Fisher
  3. Sarah E Fisher born August 15, 1847 died January 15, 1911. She married ? Carruthers. She was a homemaker. She died from ruptured blood vessels at the heart or brain, as determined after death.
  4. Samuel P Fisher born 1849, died 1867. Buried at Mount Carmel in Perry Township, Tuscarawas, Ohio. The record states he was the son of J and C Fisher. James is buried there as well.
  5. James M. Fisher born March 18,  1855, died 1919 of cancer. He was a carpenter. He was married but no info on his spouse. No autopsy was done because he had hereditary symptoms.
  6. Mary Alice Fisher born 1860, died 1914 of cancer. She married Albert Hilliker (b. May 1851) of New York. He was a machinist. Oddly, the 1920 Census states her father was born in England, her mother in Maryland.

Frances (Fannie) May  born May 27, 1880, died Jan 23, 1945. She married Harry Nelson Rank (Jan 7, 1879 – September 26, 1962). Harry worked in wholesale grocery in 1910, was a clay worker in the sewer pipe industry in 1930, and was a laborer at a clay plant in 1940.

Henry William Fisher and Sarah Ann Johnston

My second great grandparents: Viola Fisher, Arthur Ferrell

Henry William Fisher was born February 8, 1846 in Rush, Tuscarawas, Ohio, US. His parents were James Fisher and Catherine Lenhart. He died November 12, 1912 in Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas, Ohio, US. He was a farmer and railroad watchman. He married Sarah Ann Johnston at Fallen Timbers on March 21, 1867. After Sarah passed, he married Anna Edie 22 Dec 1909 at Tuscarawas, Ohio, United States. His marriage certificate to Anna Edie does state he was married previously, and lists James Fisher and Catherine Lenhart as his parents. His death certificate states his father as Lawrence Fisher; I assume Lawrence was his father’s middle name.

Henry’s family owned the Fisher Railroad Station. At the time of his marriage to Anna Edie, he was working at the railway shop. I would presume he worked for his family at the station his entire life, aside from the periods he was a farmer. He was able to read and write.

As of the 1880 US Census, Henry was working and yet it states he was temporarily sick or disabled though no specific illness is given.  At the time of the 1910 Census, he was working as a waiter – the census record looks to read, at a boiler shop? As of the 1900 and 1910 Census records, he had been unemployed zero times so whatever the issue in 1880, I would presume it cleared up or he was able to work through it or else just had to. Cause of death on his death certificate states creeping paralysis, which he was being treated for 170 days prior to death. Creeping paralysis is an old term for polio which was epidemic at that time.

In 1870, a Samuel Linard was living with Henry and Sarah. I wonder if this perhaps is an uncle, brother to Catherine Lenhart. In 1910, their son Jasper was living with Henry and Anna at the age of 20.

Sarah Ann Johnston  I haven’t been able to find much on. It’s known she had eight brothers, according to our family history. It appears her last name was probably originally spelled Johnston but it got changed to Johnson on numerous records throughout her life. She was born January 26, 1846 in Steubenville, Jefferson, Ohio, US and died May 28, 1906 in Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas, Ohio, US. From the US Census data, we do know her father was born in Ohio, and her mother in England. Sarah was able to read and write. She was a homemaker. According to the death record, she died from dropsy of the heart. Parents are listed as unknown on the death record.

Sarah’s parents were Abraham Johnston and Hepzibah Kershaw. In 1850, they were living in Steubenville and Hepzibah was born in England. Sarah was the only child at this time, so it appears she was the oldest. By 1860, they were living in Rush, Tuscarawas, Ohio, US and Sarah had 2 sisters and one brother.

Their children were:

  1. Ross McClellan Fisher born July 12 1863, died October 27 1941 in Coshocton, Ohio, US. Married Sarah.

  2. Charles W Fisher born about 1868. He married Maggie Evans (born 1870) and had a son, Walter Fisher (born 1887). Died 1949 in Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas, Ohio, US.
  3. Abraham F Fisher born February 18, 1870 in Perry Township, Tuscarawas, Ohio, US. Died at Dennison, Summit, Ohio, US in 1939.
  4. Isadora Fisher born March 18, 1872. He died in 1913 in Uhrichsville and it appears his first name may have been Henry.
  5. Harry A Fisher born July 15, 1874. Married Ethel M. Dill (1878). Maud Dill was listed on the 1900 Census as their servant. Died September 3, 1955 in Uhrichsville.
  6. Robert P Fisher born September 21, 1878 in Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas, Ohio, US. Died October 28, 1957.
  7. Viola May Fisher
  8. James Clifford Lewelly Fisher born September 3, 1882, died January 28, 1952. Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas, Ohio, US. His WWI draft record states he was short and stout with blue eyes and light colored hair, and he was an engine inspector. On his WWII draft record, he is mentioned as being 5’5.5″, 220 pounds and having a ruddy complexion, with grey hair. He married Cora Belle St. John (born 1886 in Michigan) in Michigan. Their marriage record names his father as James Henry Fisher. They had at least one daughter, Dorothy Marie (born 1909), who compiled much of the Fisher information which was passed down through my family.
  9. Jasper Leroy Fisher born January 25, 1891 in Uhrichsville, Ohio, US. Married Etta Nell Cecil (1891 – 1979). Died April 21, 1982 in Scio, Harrison, Ohio, US. Their children were Donald Leroy Fisher (1913-1998), Evelyn M Fisher Walker (1916 – 2012), Earl R Fisher (1920)
